The purpose of this study was to develop the OL-IAT, an IAT tool that measures implicit attitudes toward organizational loyalty, and to verify its predictive validity. In total, 15 respondents were randomly selected from among the employees of P Company. The respondents were then asked open questions about the image they held of the target company. Based on their responses, a list of words was compiled for use on the OL-IAT. Evaluation categories, either like-dislike or positive-negative, were developed for this (...) test based on the approach-avoidance words proposed by Ostafin and Palfai. The OL-IAT was then administered to 127 employees of Company P, and self-reporting measures were also devised to measure explicit attitudes. A survey of whether the implicit attitude toward organizational loyalty was consistent with the explicit attitude showed that there was no significant correlation, and the attitude inconsistency was evident in the responses. When differences in rank were accounted for, organizational loyalty attitudes were consistent at the manager level, and organizational participation attitudes were consistent at the manager and general staff levels. This study will aid in the development of effective measures of organizational loyalty and accelerate interventions to increase it, which in turn will positively impact long-term organizational growth. Despite the increased attention to corporate social responsibility (CSR) and regulatory changes in recent years, little is known about how apparel companies are implementing and communicating CSR practices to their stakeholders. To fill the gap, this study investigated the range and strategies of leading apparel specialty retailers’ CSR practices as communicated on their websites over a longitudinal period of 1 year. In total, 17 apparel specialty retailers were included in the analysis. The companies’ websites were content-analyzed in-depth using the coding (...) criteria focusing on labor and environmental issues developed for this study. The initial data were collected in November 2011 and the study was replicated in December 2012 to examine any changes in the CSR practices. As of 2011 only nine companies addressed CSR issues on their websites at different degrees despite their leadership positions in the industry. Environmental issues were addressed by only five companies, with different ranges of practices. In 2012, all 17 companies addressed labor issues on their websites with varying degrees of specificity. In terms of environmental issues, six companies (an increase of one company from 2011) addressed environmental initiatives on their websites with wider ranges of practices. Discussed are problems and opportunities, as well as the role of the government and stakeholders, for the effective communications of CSR policies and initiatives for the apparel industry. (shrink)

Dreamscapes of Modernity offers the first book-length treatment of sociotechnical imaginaries, a concept originated by Sheila Jasanoff and developed in close collaboration with Sang-Hyun Kim to describe how visions of scientific and technological progress carry with them implicit ideas about public purposes, collective futures, and the common good. The book presents a mix of case studies—including nuclear power in Austria, Chinese rice biotechnology, Korean stem cell research, the Indonesian Internet, US bioethics, global health, and more—to illustrate how the concept (...) of sociotechnical imaginaries can lead to more sophisticated understandings of the national and transnational politics of science and technology. A theoretical introduction sets the stage for the contributors’ wide-ranging analyses, and a conclusion gathers and synthesizes their collective findings. The book marks a major theoretical advance for a concept that has been rapidly taken up across the social sciences and promises to become central to scholarship in science and technology studies. This study proposes a structural extension to the Phase–Mediation–Resonance (PMR) model by addressing a fundamental limitation of the original framework: the absence of an explicit account of the origin of difference. The PMR model defines existence as a relational state structured by difference. However, it does not specify how difference itself emerges. The present study introduces the Cup–Mre structural model, expressed as C → U → P → (M ⊕ R) → E, to account for the pre-phase conditions under which (...) difference arises. Within this model, C is defined as a state of providential consciousness, U as a state of undifferentiated potential, and P as the emergence of phase through structural differentiation. The transition from U to P is defined as an event of structural emergence triggered by condition fulfillment rather than as a gradual transformation. This extension preserves the internal consistency of the PMR framework while providing a foundational explanation for the generation of difference. The integration of the Cup–Mre model with the PMR structure enables a unified account of pre-differential states and observable phenomena. (shrink)

This study proposes a structural model of existence and perception based on three fundamental concepts: phase, mediation, and resonance. Within this framework, existence is not understood as a fixed substance or a set of separate layers, but as a relational state defined by difference. Phases interact through mediation, an operative structure that enables alignment between differences. When such alignment reaches a critical configuration, it manifests as resonance. ​This model explains how unobservable conditions become observable phenomena through a continuous process of (...) phase, alignment, mediation, resonance, manifestation, and perception. Material reality is defined as the result of resonance rather than as an independent ontological entity. The framework enables the interpretation of physical phenomena, biological synchronization, and perceptual processes within a unified structural model. ​Furthermore, this study proposes a transition condition under which resonance occurs when differences form a critical structure of alignment. This condition emerges through the combined effects of internal accumulation, external interaction, and selective structuring. Through this, the model opens the possibility for formalization and potential scientific interpretation. (shrink)

This study consolidates the Cup–Mre–PMR framework by establishing it as a closed generative structure of existence. While previous studies introduced the Phase– Mediation–Resonance (PMR) model and extended it through the Cup–Mre structure, the present work does not propose new concepts. The objective of this study is to fix the definitions, structural relations, and transition rules developed in earlier stages. The structure is formally defined as: C → U → P → (M ⊕ R) → E All core components—C, U, P, (...) M, R, and E—are established as invariant elements. The transition from U to P is defined as a discontinuous structural event in which difference emerges. The relation between M and R is fixed as process and event, respectively. This study transforms the framework from an open model into a closed and stable reference structure. Following this work, further research is restricted to application, interpretation, and formalization within the fixed system. (shrink)

낙학의 김창흡은 인간과 동물 모두 오상(五常)이 품부되었다는 인물성동론(人物性同論)을 주장하면서 호학의 인물성이론(人物性異論)을 비판하였고, 이에 대하여 호학의 심조는 인간은 오상을 모두 품부받았지만 동물은 하나만을 받았다는 인물성이론을 주장하면서 김창흡의 비판을 반박하였다. 심조는 김창흡의 인물성동론으로 본다면 곤충에게서도 사단(四端)이 나타나게 된다고 비판하였다. 왜냐하면 사단은 오상에서 발현되기 때문이다. 하지만 심조가 비판하기 이전에 김창흡은 이현익과의 논쟁에서 동물은 오상을 품부받았으나 그 실천이 온 전하지 못하다고 주장하였으므로 곤충 뿐만 아니라 다른 동물도 사단이 온전히 나타날 수 없다고 생각하였다. 이것은 16세기 사단칠정논쟁과 구별되는 것이다. 『중용장구』의 ‘각득소부지리(各得所賦之理)’를 근거로 김창흡은 인간과 동물이 모두 (...) 오상을 품부받았다고 해석하여 인물성동론을 주장한 반면에 심조는 인간은 오상을 모두 품부받았으나 동물은 그 중의 하나만을 품부받았다고 해석하여 인물성이론을 주장하였다. 또한 김창흡은 인간과 동물의 본성을 이일분수(理一分殊)에서 이일(理一)의 리로 본 반면에 심조는 분수(分殊)의 리로 보았다. The demand for organ transplants, both globally and in South Korea, substantially exceeds the supply, a situation that might have been aggravated by the enactment of the Life-Sustaining Treatment Decision Act (LSTDA) in February 2018. This legislation may influence emergency medical procedures and the availability of organs from brain-dead donors. This study aimed to assess LSTDA’s impact, introduced in February 2018, on organ donation status in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients in a metropolitan city and identified related factors. We conducted (...) a retrospective analysis of a regional cardiac arrest registry. This study included patients aged 16 or older with cardiac arrest and a cerebral performance category (CPC) score of 5 from January 2015 to December 2022. The exclusion criteria were CPC scores of 1–4, patients under 16 years, and patients declared dead or transferred from emergency departments. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyse factors affecting organ donation. Of the 751 patients included in this study, 47 were organ donors, with a median age of 47 years. Before the LSTDA, there were 30 organ donations, which declined to 17 after its implementation. In the organ donation group, the causes of cardiac arrest included medical (34%), hanging (46.8%), and trauma (19.2%). The adjusted odds ratio for organ donation before the LSTDA implementation was 6.12 (95% CI 3.09–12.12), with non-medical aetiology as associated factors. The enactment of the LSTDA in 2018 in South Korea may be linked to reduced organ donations among patients with OHCA, underscoring the need to re-evaluate the medical and legal aspects of organ donation, especially considering end-of-life care decisions. BackgroundAs large language models (LLMs) evolve, assessing their competence in ethically sensitive domains such as medical ethics has become increasingly important. Since medical ethics is a universal component of medical education, disparities in AI performance across languages may result in unequal benefits for learners. Therefore, it is essential to examine performances in non-English contexts. While previous studies have evaluated performance of Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer(ChatGPT) on English-language multiple-choice questions (MCQs) in medical ethics, none have examined version-based improvements across non-English contexts. (...) This study therefore evaluated ChatGPT versions 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5 for MCQs on Korean medical ethics and their English translations, with a focus on performance trends across versions and languages.MethodsWe selected 36 MCQs from the Korean National Medical Licensing Examination and the Comprehensive Clinical Medicine Evaluation databases. Each question was entered ten times per ChatGPT version (3.5, 4.0, 4.5) and language (Korean, English) for a total of 60 trials. Additionally, to assess the model’s capacity to identify the ethical core without relying on the options provided, 31 of the 36 questions were modified by masking the correct choice. Accuracy was analyzed using independent sample t-tests and Mann Whitney U test, and consistency was assessed using Krippendorff’s alpha.ResultsOverall, the accuracy and consistency of ChatGPT improved with each version. Version 4.5 achieved near-perfect scores and high reliability in both languages, while version 3.5 showed limited performance, particularly in the Korean test. Performance gaps between languages decreased with model upgrades but remained statistically significant in version 4.5 for some questions. In the masked-answer condition, all versions showed notable drops in accuracy and consistency, with version 4.5 still outperforming earlier versions. However, the performance remained below 50%, indicating limitations in the model’s autonomous ethical reasoning.ConclusionsChatGPT demonstrated substantial improvements in medical ethics MCQ performance across versions, particularly in terms of consistency and accuracy. However, performance disparities between languages and reduced accuracy under masked answer conditions highlight the ongoing limitations of non-English ethical reasoning and context recognition. These findings emphasize the need for further research on language-sensitive fine-tuning and the evaluation of LLMs in specialized ethical domains. The findings suggest that advanced LLMs may serve as valuable supplementary tools in medical education and clinical ethics training. At the same time, the observed language disparities call for context-sensitive adaptations to prevent inequities in practice. (shrink)

This study investigates corporate social responsibility of sinful firms, which refer to ones that are operating in controversial industries, including the production and distribution of alcohol, tobacco, gambling, adult entertainment, firearm, military, and nuclear power. We attempt to answer two questions in this study: Do these sinful firms actively advertise their CSR engagements compared to non-sinful firms? And do their advertising efforts really yield increased financial performance? Positing that advertising not only can make sinful firms’ good deeds visible, but also (...) can highlight the contradiction between these firms’ stigma and their prosocial activities, we claim that sinful firms are likely to advertise their CSR engagement to overcome their stigmatized firm image, but these advertising activities will make the firms’ performance vulnerable by inducing skepticism from stakeholders. Using KLD database in conjunction with COMPUSTAT and Center for Research in Security Prices from 1991 to 2010, where 337 firms are involved in the controversial sinful industries, namely tobacco, alcohol, gaming, firearms, military, and nuclear power, we examine the effect of advertising spending of sinful firms’ CSR engagement on performance vulnerability, which is instantiated with idiosyncratic risk. The empirical results indicate that sinful firms increase their advertising expenditure when they engage in CSR programs, but these efforts for advertising CSR tend to increase idiosyncratic risk. This finding indicates that even though sinful firms can benefit from engaging in socially responsible initiatives, advertising their CSR efforts may backfire. (shrink)

This essay reviews the origins and limits of Confucian modernity, dating back to Confucius’s teachings (method of humorous self-directed questioning, pursuit of objective-collective freedom through etiquette practice), and compares them with Socrates’s teachings (method of ironic refutation, pursuit of subjective-personal freedom through alternative thinking) that we can find in the origins of Western democracy and Enlightenment. It also examines how much the driving forces of Confucian modernity (knowledge-oriented attitude, ideal of self-cultivation, seek of a stable system, meritocracy) could satisfy the (...) conditions of postmodern society, explaining how they are revealed recently in the so-called Chinese Dream. The purpose of the present study is twofold. The first is to reveal the unique significance on publicness in the Confucian 儒家 tradition. In order to achieve this, Confucian philosophical documents that explain the state 國 (guo) and the family 家 (jia), and loyalty 忠 (zhong) and filial piety 孝 (xiao) as continuous relationships will be analyzed. The second is to elucidate that the most important principle for maintaining the Confucian distinction between the public and the private, or publicness in (...) the Confucian sense, is the scholar-gentry 士 (shi) spirit. In order to achieve this, the significance of uprightness 直 (zhi) and conducting oneself with reverence 居敬 (jujing), which are central to the scholar-gentry spirit, will be translated into contemporary terms and, furthermore, the possibility of Confucian existentialism will be explored. The final point of the present study is that the condition for the inheritance of the Confucian concept of publicness in modern culture must be found in the possibility of Confucian existentialism. The present study develops an artificial agent that plays the iterative chicken game based on a computational model that describes human behavior in competitive social interactions in terms of fairness. The computational model we adopted in this study, named as the self-concept fairness model, decides the agent’s action according to the evaluation of fairness of both opponent and self. We implemented the artificial agent in a computer program with a set of parameters adjustable by researchers. These parameters allow researchers to (...) determine the extent to which the agent behaves aggressively or cooperatively. To demonstrate the use of the proposed method for the investigation of human behavior, we performed an experiment in which human participants played the iterative chicken game against the artificial agent. Participants were divided into two groups, each being informed to play with either a person or the computer. The behavioral analysis results showed that the proposed method can induce changes in the behavioral pattern of human players by changing the agent’s behavioral pattern. Also, we found that participants tended to be more sensitive to fairness when they played with a human opponent than with a computer opponent. These results support that the artificial agent developed in this study will be useful to investigate human behavior in competitive social interactions. (shrink)
